Be careful with “chemical-free” pool claims
You’ll see some pool systems advertised as chemical-free, or as needing no sanitizer at all. Here’s the reality: a pool needs a small amount of sanitizer in the water at all times, usually chlorine, to stay safe for swimmers. Without that residual, bacteria and algae can take hold fast. Even commercial pools with advanced equipment keep a sanitizer in the water.
Here’s what’s usually behind the claim:
Ionizers release copper, and sometimes silver, into the water. Used alone, they can leave stains and cause other water-balance problems.
Ozone systems do work, but the effective ones are commercial-grade, can cost tens of thousands of dollars, and need extra equipment to safely remove leftover ozone. The small units sold for backyard pools don’t make enough ozone to sanitize on their own.
Saltwater pools aren’t chlorine-free. The system turns salt into chlorine, so you’re still swimming in chlorinated water.

American College of Sports Medicine Study
This research was the first to investigate how typical chorine concentrations can cause respiratory problems. This ground-breaking study presented at the American College of Sports Medicine found exposure to traditional chlorine levels constricted airways in the lungs leading to coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath. The typical chlorine level found in most pools is between 2 ppm and 4 ppm. According to the study, this concentration of chlorine causes some serious breathing problems. But when chlorine was lowered to just 0.5 ppm the problems disappeared. Other studies have confirmed that pulmonary function decreases when subjects are exposed to 1.0 ppm, but no adverse effects were found at 0.5 ppm chlorine.
